How Hip Injuries Can Affect Daily Life

Hip problems often develop gradually. What begins as occasional discomfort in the groin, buttock or upper thigh may eventually make walking, climbing stairs, getting out of a chair or even sleeping comfortably more difficult.

Many people continue adapting their activities around this developing pain, not realising that their mobility is getting worse and worse. When injury, arthritis, tendon disorders or other hip conditions affect the joint, pain and stiffness can progressively limit these movements and reduce overall quality of life.

What Are the Common Causes of Hip Conditions and Injuries?

Hip conditions can arise from injuries, degenerative changes, inflammatory conditions or abnormalities affecting the structure of the joint. Common causes include:

  • Falls and Trauma
Direct impact to the hip may result in fractures, dislocations or damage to surrounding soft tissues.
  • Sports and Physical Activity
Repetitive running, twisting, pivoting and high-impact activities can place excessive stress on the hip joint.
  • Cartilage Wear and Tear
Gradual deterioration of the joint surface can lead to pain, stiffness and reduced mobility over time.
  • Inflammatory Conditions
Disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis may cause chronic inflammation and progressive joint damage.
  • Tendon and Muscle Injuries
Strains, tears and overuse injuries affecting the muscles and tendons around the hip can impair movement and function.
  • Structural Abnormalities
Differences in hip shape or joint alignment may increase friction within the joint and contribute to long-term damage.

Who Is at Risk of Experiencing Hip Injuries?

Certain factors may increase the risk of developing hip problems, including:

  • Participation in sports or high-impact activities
  • Physically demanding occupations
  • Previous hip injuries or fractures
  • Increasing age
  • Arthritis and other inflammatory conditions
  • Reduced flexibility or muscle strength around the hip

Common Signs and Symptoms of Hip Problems

Hip conditions and injuries can affect far more than the joint itself. Many people notice changes in their mobility long before they realise the hip is the source of the problem. Common symptoms include:

Pain in the Groin, Hip or Upper Thigh

Pain originating from the hip joint is often felt deep in the groin, although it may also spread to the outer hip, buttock or upper thigh.

Difficulty Getting Up from a Seated Position

Pain or stiffness when standing up from a chair, getting out of a car or rising from bed may indicate reduced hip function.

Reduced Hip Mobility

Everyday movements such as bending down, crossing your legs or putting on shoes and socks may become increasingly difficult.

Pain After Walking and Standing

Discomfort may develop after walking certain distances, climbing stairs or remaining on your feet for extended periods.

Limping

Some patients unconsciously change the way they walk to reduce pressure on a painful hip, resulting in a noticeable limp.

Stiffness After Periods of Rest

The hip may feel particularly stiff after waking up in the morning or after prolonged sitting.

Pain That Affects Sleep

Hip pain can become more noticeable at night and may make it difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position.

When Should You See a Hip Specialist?

While some hip discomfort may improve with rest, ongoing symptoms often require further assessment to determine the underlying cause.

You should consider consulting a hip specialist if:

  • Your symptoms have not improved after several weeks
  • Hip pain repeatedly returns
  • Symptoms are becoming more frequent or severe
  • Everyday activities are becoming increasingly difficult
  • You have reduced your activity level because of hip problems
  • Previous treatments have not provided lasting relief
  • You are concerned that your mobility is gradually worsening
  • You would like a clearer understanding of your diagnosis and treatment options

Hip pain and stiffness can gradually affect mobility and independence.

Early assessment can help identify the cause and prevent symptoms from worsening.

Hip Conditions We Specialise in Treating

Our clinic manages a range of hip conditions and injuries that can affect mobility, comfort and everyday function. These include:

Hip Pointer

A hip pointer is an injury involving bruising or damage to the iliac crest, the bony prominence at the upper part of the pelvis. It is commonly caused by a direct blow to the hip, a sudden twisting movement or a hard fall, and can result in significant pain during movement and physical activity.

Hip Bursitis

Hip bursitis occurs when one of the fluid-filled bursae that reduces friction around the hip joint becomes inflamed. This can cause pain around the outer hip or groin area, particularly when walking, climbing stairs, exercising or during prolonged periods of activity.

Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI)

Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) occurs when abnormal contact develops between the ball and socket of the hip joint due to differences in the shape of the bones. Over time, this repeated friction can damage the cartilage and labrum, leading to groin pain, stiffness and difficulty with activities that involve hip flexion, such as squatting, running or prolonged sitting.

Labral Tears

The labrum is a ring of cartilage that helps stabilise and cushion the hip joint. Labral tears may develop following injury, repetitive hip movements or underlying structural abnormalities such as femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). Symptoms commonly include groin pain, clicking sensations, stiffness and reduced hip function.

Hip Osteoarthritis

Hip osteoarthritis develops when the cartilage that cushions the hip joint gradually wears away over time. As the joint surfaces become less protected, patients may experience pain, stiffness, inflammation and progressive loss of mobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Hip

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation within the hip joint. It can lead to pain, swelling, stiffness and gradual damage to the joint, affecting mobility and daily function.

Hip Fractures

A hip fracture is a break or crack in the upper portion of the femur near the hip joint. These injuries commonly occur following falls or significant trauma and can severely affect mobility, often requiring prompt medical treatment.

Early assessment of hip symptoms can help identify the underlying cause and determine the most appropriate management approach.

What Happens During a Hip Specialist Consultation?

During your consultation, Dr Seng will assess how your hip symptoms affect your mobility, daily activities and overall quality of life. He will discuss your pain patterns, walking ability, activity level, previous injuries and symptoms such as stiffness, limping, reduced range of motion or difficulty with movements such as climbing stairs, getting out of a chair or putting on shoes and socks.

A physical examination may be performed to assess hip movement, joint function, muscle strength, areas of tenderness and walking mechanics. Where necessary, imaging studies such as X-rays or MRI scans may be recommended to evaluate the condition of the hip joint and surrounding structures.

Once a diagnosis has been established, Dr Seng will explain the cause of your symptoms and discuss the most appropriate treatment options. Depending on the condition, this may include activity modification, physiotherapy, medication, injections or surgical intervention.

FAQs About Hip Pain & Conditions

How do I know if my hip pain is serious?

Hip pain should be assessed if it persists for several weeks, repeatedly returns, affects your mobility or interferes with daily activities. Pain that causes limping, difficulty bearing weight, loss of movement, sleep disturbance or symptoms following a fall or injury may indicate an underlying condition that requires specialist attention.

Why does my hip hurt when I walk or climb stairs?

Walking and climbing stairs place additional forces on the hip joint. Conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, tendon injuries and other hip disorders may become more noticeable during these activities because the affected structures are required to work harder to support movement and body weight.

Can hip pain spread to the groin or thigh?

Yes. Pain originating from the hip joint is commonly felt in the groin area, but it may also radiate into the buttock, outer hip or upper thigh. Because of this, some patients do not initially realise that the hip joint is the source of their symptoms.

Do all hip conditions require surgery?

No. Many hip conditions can be managed successfully with physiotherapy, activity modification, medication, injections or other non-surgical treatments. Surgery is generally considered when symptoms remain significant despite conservative management or when there is substantial joint damage affecting mobility and quality of life.

How do I know if I need a hip replacement?

Hip replacement may be considered when arthritis or joint damage causes persistent pain, significant stiffness and difficulty performing everyday activities despite appropriate non-surgical treatment. A specialist assessment, physical examination and imaging studies are usually required to determine whether hip replacement is suitable.

How should I sit to reduce hip pain?

When sitting, the feet should always be flat against the floor. The lower back should have a gentle curve that is supported by the back of the chair to prevent slumping. Your shoulders and neck should be relaxed while sitting.

How should I sleep with hip pain?

Some patients may benefit from placing a pillow between the knees when side sleeping or under the knees when lying on their back. The most suitable sleeping position depends on the underlying cause of the hip pain.
